I have eaten ridiculous amounts of food and drunk copious volumes of wine.

And I am very very tired, and in Naples, on the verge of doing it all again for another 5 days...

Okay, naptime. Then a quick tour of the city this evening, then sleeeeep as late as possible before schlepping it to the meeting point for the tour of the next five days...

Cripes. I just realised its only 11:30. I thought it was an hour later...

sleeeeeep

Okay, so the bit where I'm falling down on the holiday is sleep.

Air-con is too much. Bed is too soft. Pillows are too hard. Not warm enough.

AAAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH

Last night, I woke up at 3:30am and...didn't really manage to get back to sleep until around 6am. And even that was only for about half an hour.

I'm travelling okay, though. COVID has cleared up, although I sometimes feel a bit stupid lately, trying to work out what I'm saying and how to say it, and thinking "I'm sure I used to know how to phrase this".

Anyway, it's nearly 11pm where I am.

Time for sleeeeeeeep.

I made it to Georgia.

Left HK in the middle of a Typhoon 8 (IDK what it was, but they started cancelling Monday flights, so it sounded pretty serious). Reached Istanbul on time as per schedule.

Istanbul was redoing their airport last time I came through here in 2022. It is the headquarters of Turkish Airlines which services a large chunk of Eastern Europe and Western Asia (and Africa, and all the major world centres).

It's freaking HUGE. And shiny. And new. But there are not enough seats, signposts, or information about what to do and where to go and what needs to be done. And nobody could tell me if I was too late to make my flight, so I didn't really have time to look at everything, although I really wanted to...

Sometimes I have to remind myself that almost everything I can get in a major airport, I can find back home in Sydney, home-made and better quality.

Made the flight to Georgia, got off, met the driver who took me to the place where the tour group was today.

I feel like I was better at this when I was younger.

Got a big dent in my self-assurance right now, and struggling: tired and a little anxious after this setback.

*sigh*

Next flight up in 18 hours...

Chicken Jockey from Minnesota!

Something with a bit more humour, because this always makes me laugh:

I first saw this on social media, but most recently I saw [personal profile] conuly post it.

The funniest part is the very deliberate way the announcer says "Chicken Jockey" almost like she can't quite believe what she's reading. (Or, it might just be the Minnesota inflection. I can't tell!)

Amusing point: We are five days into September and I have already written over half of what I wrote in August. August was absolutely a MISERABLE month for writing.

not quite

I spent most of the day in the room, listning to an irregular rumble that never quite seemed to stop...

..around 5:30pm, I realised that it was the elevators.

I called down to the front desk and they promptly moved me...to a room at the back corner which smelled like it had previously housed a smoker. You're not allowed to smoke in the rooms, sure. But someone who smokes like a chimney had inhabited that room not too long ago, and I could smell it.

I called down to the front desk, they sent up housekeeping, who sprayed perfume through the room. Not helping! And then they moved me yet again - about four rooms along and there's no smell and no elevator rumble...

What a drama. And I'd slept pretty well last night. It was just during the day that I was listening to that rumble and thought at first it must be construction work, only to realise after hours that, no, it's probably the elevators.

Bad design, as my dad the architect would say.

At any rate, I'm moved again.

NOW can the drama be over? Please? Pretty please?

I'm feeling better still - more energy, but the slightly congested nose and throat again. I stopped taking the phenylephrine after last night. And looking through the drugs the doc gave me, there's an anti-histamine, and an anti-inflammatory, and when I tried taking the metformin (another anti-inflammatory) last night...let's just say it got unpretty.

Tonight and tomorrow is to make sure I'm back to (near-)fighting fit. I should have been in Georgia, by now, meeting the rest of the tour...

*sigh* Okay, no dwelling. Just resting.

shelter in place

I've found somewhere to stay for the next three days and moved there.

there was a bit of drama )

Hopefully this marks the end of the change-in-programming part of my trip.

I mean, I've done this before. I've worn it and managed it. But it puts me off. And with my health in the mix, I'm anxious. And tired.

I need to have something to eat. Take my medication, and go to bed. Friday and Saturday await, and at least I'm somewhere I don't feel guilty about being in someone else's space (where I was before, although she was very nice about me being sick).

yeah, nup

It's COVID.

Took a RAT, saw a doc and got a medical certificate written and some medication to treat the symptoms - they don't have free antivirals as of six months ago, dammit.

I'm vaxxed up to JN.1 (whatever the most recent version is) and that's good, because it hopefully means it'll be mild. But it still sucks.

Still trying to work out what I need to collect on the travel insurance for medical situation causing disruption to travel plans.

Probably a PCR and that's going to be the tricky part around here.

--

Had taste and smell (well, relatively, other than blocked nose) up to this afternoon. Mostly I'm feeling fluey - and tired.

--

Things I did not need: the eastern european friend who has a tendency to be upbeatedly-depressing telling me she hopes I don't get Long COVID like she did 8 weeks after she got COVID... I mean, I hope I don't, too, but I didn't need something else to think about...

sick while travelling

Ugh. Alas, for I have caught a bug. Virus. Thingy. Whatever.

Runny nose, blocked ears, exhaustion, sore throat.

Luckily, I had some antibiotics to take for it, so that's made things a little easier, but I suspect it's one of those longer-running, harder-hitting viruses.

Going to ask the halfbro for thoughts on a medical centre that I could maybe get seen by a doc and possibly get some stronger antibiotics? Also take a test, in case what I have is one of the worrying ones.

Probably doesn't help that I'm in Hong Kong (and was in Singapore) where it's very hot and humid, and so I start sweating like crayz when I'm not standing in a breeze. I mean, that was likely anyway, but the feeling of my eyes and nose and ears and sinuses all being stuffed up is not fun.

I'm also vaguely worried about the next leg of the trip which is two booked tours where they'll exclude me if I'm not healthy.

So, mostly rest while here in HK. That's the plan. It's just hard because it's so hot and blech and no respite. But the air con wasn't great in Singapore - it just felt cold and hard and sharp in my throat. So what with one thing and another, it's all a bit much.

I've been sick while traveling before - ironically, I was also on a tour that time. But it was pre-covid and people didn't worry quite so much about pandemics.

I've been vaxxed - covid 6 months ago, and flu more recently - but it's just the stuffiness that's not feeling great right now.

Code deploy happening shortly

Per the [site community profile] dw_news post regarding the MS/TN blocks, we are doing a small code push shortly in order to get the code live. As per usual, please let us know if you see anything wonky.

There is some code cleanup we've been doing that is going out with this push but I don't think there is any new/reworked functionality, so it should be pretty invisible if all goes well.

A reminder to everyone that starting tomorrow, we are being forced to block access to any IP address that geolocates to the state of Mississippi for legal reasons while we and Netchoice continue fighting the law in court. People whose IP addresses geolocate to Mississippi will only be able to access a page that explains the issue and lets them know that we'll be back to offer them service as soon as the legal risk to us is less existential.

The block page will include the apology but I'll repeat it here: we don't do geolocation ourselves, so we're limited to the geolocation ability of our network provider. Our anti-spam geolocation blocks have shown us that their geolocation database has a number of mistakes in it. If one of your friends who doesn't live in Mississippi gets the block message, there is nothing we can do on our end to adjust the block, because we don't control it. The only way to fix a mistaken block is to change your IP address to one that doesn't register as being in Mississippi, either by disconnecting your internet connection and reconnecting it (if you don't have a static IP address) or using a VPN.

In related news, the judge in our challenge to Tennessee's social media age verification, parental consent, and parental surveillance law (which we are also part of the fight against!) ruled last month that we had not met the threshold for a temporary injunction preventing the state from enforcing the law while the court case proceeds.

The Tennesee law is less onerous than the Mississippi law and the fines for violating it are slightly less ruinous (slightly), but it's still a risk to us. While the fight goes on, we've decided to prevent any new account signups from anyone under 18 in Tennessee to protect ourselves against risk. We do not need to block access from the whole state: this only applies to new account creation.

Because we don't do any geolocation on our users and our network provider's geolocation services only apply to blocking access to the site entirely, the way we're implementing this is a new mandatory question on the account creation form asking if you live in Tennessee. If you do, you'll be unable to register an account if you're under 18, not just the under 13 restriction mandated by COPPA. Like the restrictions on the state of Mississippi, we absolutely hate having to do this, we're sorry, and we hope we'll be able to undo it as soon as possible.

Finally, I'd like to thank every one of you who's commented with a message of support for this fight or who's bought paid time to help keep us running. The fact we're entirely user-supported and you all genuinely understand why this fight is so important for everyone is a huge part of why we can continue to do this work. I've also sent a lot of your comments to the lawyers who are fighting the actual battles in court, and they find your wholehearted support just as encouraging and motivating as I do. Thank you all once again for being the best users any social media site could ever hope for. You make me proud and even more determined to yell at state attorneys general on your behalf.
